Introducing PLATANOS Paxos Ceramic Studio

The Paxos Ceramics Studio « Platanos » is a specially designed building by Corfu architect Marilena Koskina, inaugurated in 2026. It is located at Platanos, a site near the village of Fountana on the Greek island of Paxos. The studio is located in a beautiful natural setting among the age-old Venetian olive groves of Paxos. It is fully equipped with two kilns, potters’ wheels and all the appropriate space and equipment necessary for ceramic production. Its purpose is to host ceramic artists who organize thematic ceramic workshops for the island’s residents and visitors.

A first workshop is scheduled for the week of August 31 2026 (see below) and a full program for the summer season of 2027, beginning in June, will be published in the autumn.

** Contemporary Ceramics in Paxos

Since 2015, distinguished Greek and international ceramic artists have been working and exhibiting their works in Paxos at the invitation of Chris Boïcos Fine Arts and under the auspices of the association of the “Friends of Paxos”. In addition, CBFA organizes exhibitions in collaboration with Greek and international ceramic artists in Greece (Museum of Traditional Greek Pottery, Athens, 2024) and abroad : Paris (2019), Villerville (2021), Châtellerault (2022), France, Lismore, Ireland (2024). International ceramics exhibitions have also been held on Paxos with the participation of French, Irish, and Spanish artists, while in 2025, more international works from Croatia, England, Serbia, Slovenia, Romania and Thailand were presented in collaboration with the 6exi Gallery in Thessaloniki.

We look forward to Platanos workshop evolving into a space for artistic encounter and dialogue. Ceramicists from different countries will have the opportunity to gather throughout the year to teach and engage creatively with one another as well as with the local community. The harmonious landscapes, rocks, sea, and light of Paxos—one of the most beautiful Greek islands in the Ionian Sea—will serve as the backdrop and inspiration for the workshop’s instructors and students. The “Platanos” Ceramics Workshop aims to contribute to the international re-emergence of ceramic art by imparting a more distinctly Greek and topical dimension to contemporary ceramics.

The art of incising is an art form that is primarily based on decorating damp, unfired ceramics with incised designs on the clay body. Red clay with a white slip, followed by decoration with lustous white, yellow and green glazes. We will work on pottery for everyday use and tableware featuring designs inspired by nature, including plant motifs, animals, birds, and religious symbols. The art of sgraffito is unique in its kind, and through it we gain many insights and details about daily life in the Byzantine era.

The seminar aims to familiarize participants with this technique and, through hands-on experience with construction, decoration, and glazing, introduce them to a distinctive and unique art form that also allows for great freedom of personal expression.
