    Fotofever Paris 2014

    Chris Boïcos Fine Arts was part of the first edition of Fotofever, the new Paris photo fair, at the Espace Cardin in 2011 and also at the Brussels edition in 2012.

    For the 2014 edition of Fotofever the theme of our stand will be « Collage ».
    We will be exhibiting photographic collages by three gallery artists:

    Jorge Rodriguez de Rivera
    Douglas Stapleton
    Vivian van Blerk

    Collage was first used in the art world in the early 20th century in the work of the Dada artists and the Surrealists (Ernst, Haussmann, Höch, Bayer…). Classic collage is still important in the contemporary art scene despite the advent of new digital techniques for the compilation and transformation of photographic images like Photoshop.

    Our artists will be presenting photographic collages in three distinctive techniques:

    Jorge Rodriguez de Rivera: Collage of figures, plants, animals or still lives, cut out from illustrations of art magazines and the French auction house magazine, the Gazette de Drouot, pasted on to photographs of urban landscapes taken by the artist.

    Douglas Stapleton: Collages of images of works of art – sculptures and paintings – cut out from old art history books and magazines, assembled and juxtaposed in strange or witty configurations against a neutral background.

    Vivian van Blerk: Black and white photographic prints by the artist are re-photographed in combination with found objects, sculptures and architectural models, also made by the artist, in his studio. The resulting single photographic negative of assembled and juxtaposed elements is then hand tinted in brilliant and artificial colors and printed.

    One of our objectives in this exhibition is to demonstrate the ongoing importance, indeed renaissance, of mechanical and manual techniques in contemporary photography despite the advent of the digital age.

    Spanish, born 1970 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
    Lives and works in Paris, France.

    After receiving his BA in economics, marketing and advertising Jorge moved to Paris where he now also works as an art dealer specializing in Spanish and Latin American modern art.
    He has been creating collages since 1998 and has been exhibiting regularly ever since.

    He has won a number of prizes for his work, which is to be found in many public collections (Musée Carnavalet, Paris/ Musée Artcolle, Brittany / CICCA, Las Palmas / Fondation Mapfre, Madrid). In April 2014 he received the first prize at the International Collage Salon held in Paris.

    His collages are made with a great variety of pictures of figures, animals, plants (notably cactuses, his personal symbol) and objects cut out mostly from illustrations in auction house catalogs, Sotheby’s, Christie’s and the Gazette de Drouot. These are carefully glued onto his own photographs of city views and landscapes. The cut-outs are frequently small and rather delicate. They are incorporated into the space of the photographs in a very subtle manner creating a truly illusionist effect. The incorporated figures seem like friendly invaders – whimsical ghosts from the historical past strolling nonchalantly through the modern streets and parks of the photos.

    For the « Landscapes and Myths » and « Poseidon » exhibitions of summer 2014 in Paxos, Greece, Jorge created four collages of the underwater world peopled by mythical figures, sea creatures and plants evoking the realm of Poseidon and his companions – visionary images mixing poetry, humour and magic.

    Dans l’univers du collage artistique, l’œuvre de Jorge Rodríguez de Rivera tient une place toute particulière. Dans sa technique il est distingué par l’attention que porte l’artiste aux minuties et aux détails. Ses personnages, plantes, animaux et objets découpés dans des livres et des catalogues de ventes aux enchères sont attentivement collés sur des photos de paysages urbains en respectant les perspectives et la profondeur du champ de la photo. La taille des personnages diminue au fur et à mesure qu’on s’approche de l’arrière-plan, créant ainsi une véritable impression de trompe-l’œil. En regardant les collages de plus près, on découvre petit à petit un nombre insoupçonné de créatures, de plantes, d’oiseaux et animaux de toutes sortes. Les personnages empruntés à la peinture victorienne ou rococo peuplent les scènes de rue modernes transformant la banalité quotidienne en une féérie magique. Les collages sont empreints de légèreté, d’humour et d’une touche de surréalisme renforcée par des titres toujours spirituels. Les titres des collages, ainsi que la signature de l’artiste et la date de l’œuvre sont discrètement inscrits en caractères minuscules sur des corniches ou des coins de mur où on les découvre avec amusement. Le cactus, omniprésent dans les collages, est le symbole personnel de l’artiste et rappelle ses origines des îles Canaries.
    Chaque collage raconte une histoire nouvelle. La narration est une autre liaison avec la tradition surréaliste. Des amants de la Belle Epoque, des personnages mythologiques, des odalisques, des Pierrots, des mendiants dickensiens et des chevaux de trait s’introduisent dans ses mises en scènes tels des comédiens égarés et sans lien apparent avec la pièce qui s’y déroule. L’histoire du collage nait de ces juxtapositions amusantes et hasardeuses et de la poésie toute surréaliste des rencontres et associations fortuites. Un des grands plaisirs dans la contemplation des œuvres de Jorge Rodriguez de Rivera est de suivre justement les mouvements, les regards et les actions des ses personnages dans leur labyrinthe féerique savamment construit, découvrant à chaque fois de nouvelles configurations et liaisons possibles.
    Synthèse de poésie, de magie et de rêveries avec un esprit enfantin qui aime créer des mondes imaginaires, l’art de Jorge a des qualités de fraicheur, de charme et de franchise devenus très rares dans le monde de l’art contemporain.

    Landscapes & Myths II

    Many of the artists in this exhibition live or have worked on the island of Paxos.
    Each in his own style an sensibility has responded to the beautiful nature and luminocity of the island. Some focus more on its villages, olive groves and seascapes, while others se in the present traces of the past. Reality and illusion, past and present, nature and art, mix in this rich exhibtion by contemporary creators. Artists from a great varity of backgrounds and cultures have come together to pay homage to the most beautiful island of the Ionian sea – Paxos.
