9 mai 2016, par Chris Boicos"In my work, time and space appear to dissolve, and an air of conflict erupts. This is often a direct result of a personal aim to calm and disturb at the same time - drawing parallels between the two extremes of utopia and dystopia. There is always a secondary narrative in my work. The primary narrative has symbolic authority and aesthetic promise, although the mysterious secondary narrative exists in order to provoke thought in the viewer.
In many ways I aim to ‘rewrite’ history in my work (...) -

8 mai 2016, par Chris Boicos"J’aime le trait, "au naturel" ou abstrait. De la nature ou hors nature, l’expression du trait est plurielle. Si le dessin et sa ligne tremblante voire hésitante furent la source première, le goût pour le trait évolue, se métamorphose, se raidit jusqu’à ce que la ligne se brise. Le temps faisant son oeuvre, le trait si présent jusqu’alors tend progressivement à disparaître au profit du motif, de la surface et la couleur.
Des premiers sujets figurés, l’arbre, la feuille, l’oiseau, d’autres appparaissent (...) -

Opening reception of W.Utermohlen : A Persistence of Memory at LUMA, Chicago !
22 février 2016, par Chris BoicosIn 1995, William Utermohlen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. For the next seven years, Utermohlen continued to make art as the disease progressed. LUMA’s exhibition of over 100 works of art shows the impact of this debilating disease on the artist’s creative output.
During this last period of his life, although feeling increasingly isolated in verbal communication, Utermohlen continued to produce meaningful images of himself and his surroundings. Indeed, if one was not aware of the (...) -

22 février 2016, par Chris BoicosU.K.based artist W. Utermohlen was diagnosed as suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in 1995 and passed away in 2007. His last works, 1990-2000, constitute a rare testimony to the inner life of a patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, documenting the gradual decay of his mind.
The exhibition William Utermohlen : A Persistence of Memory, curated by Chris Boicos and Jennifer Norback, is held in conjunction with LUMA’s ilLUMAnations program that uses the arts to engage Alzheimer’s patients (...)
